What is Galvalume?

Here at ArchBuildings.com, we are adamant about giving you the highest of quality in all of our materials. That is why we use Galvalume steel within all of our buildings. Recently we have had a lot of questions about what Galvalume actually is. Is it the same as Galvanized? Does it cost more? How long does it last? All of those questions can be answered here.

Galvalume is perfectly suited for:

  • Roofing and siding applications
  • Unexposed automotive parts
  • Appliances
  • Furniture
  • Outdoor cabinetry
  • Computer cases
  • Gutters
  • Pipes

Galvalume was invented by a company called Bethlehem Steel in 1972. The name is trademarked, but a lot of people use it as a generic term for metal that is coated with an alloy. Generally used for siding and roofing, this alloy consists of 45% zinc and 55% aluminum. It has a similar look to Galvanized steel except the crystals are closer together which gives it a smoother looking exterior.

Galvanized steel goes through a chemical process. It is coated with zinc oxide which bonds with the metal.  It has two benefits; the first is that is makes the metal rust resistant. The zinc acts as a barrier to the elements keeping the oxygen away from the iron in the steel. The second benefit is that over time the metal will create a patina. This patina will act as another barrier that protects the metal from scratches.

When using a Galvalume coating you are taking the best of both types of metal. The zinc in the alloy will act just the same as in the Galvanized steel .It gives you rust protection and scratch protection. However the aluminum adds separate positive qualities. It gives the metal a high resistance to heat and a more corrosion resistant coating than Galvanized steel. This high heat resistance will reflect heat waves off of your building which will lower energy bills and improve your comfort.

Both Galvalume and Galvanized steel weigh about the same, they contain the same amount of recycled materials, they both cost about the same, and Galvalume should last longer. It only makes more sense to use Galvalume steel!
